The Cayman Islands Ministry of Health and Wellness has released an advisory warning residents about the risk of Oropouche virus, a mosquito-borne illness.
Local health officials have confirmed that there are currently no reported cases of Oropouche virus in the Cayman Islands, as of August 9, 2024.
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) issued an alert earlier this month after the virus was found to be spreading in Central and South America and the Caribbean, including areas where it had not been previously reported.
The common symptoms of Oropouche virus are similar to those of Dengue and include fever, chills, headache, joint stiffness, and pain. These symptoms usually last for 5-7 days, and severe cases of Oropouche virus are rare.
The Ministry encourages those who have a fever along with muscle or joint pain to contact their GP for testing, advice, and any questions, especially if they have traveled to an area with rising cases.
It is important to remain vigilant and take the necessary precautions, especially with young children. Take steps to keep mosquitoes out of the home by using air conditioning and ensuring that doors and windows are screened (with no damage to the screens). Empty, clean, and cover any items outside that hold water, such as small children’s pools, buckets, and flowerpots. Purchase mosquito repellent that is suitable for babies and young children; be sure to read the label or consult with your child’s pediatrician for advice.
