Hurricane Preparedness: Tips for New Parents

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to September each year, so it’s essential to be prepared in case a storm hits. This includes having a family emergency and evacuation plan, securing your home, and more. Preparation is particularly important for new parents, as there are additional considerations and costs when caring for a newborn. We understand that having a baby is a significant life change that comes with a range of emotions. The potential for a hurricane can add to those anxieties, but having a well-thought-out plan can help ease worries and ensure you are ready if a storm occurs. To assist new parents living in the Cayman Islands, we have created a hurricane preparedness checklist.

General Evacuation Plan

It’s important to have a plan for evacuation if required during a hurricane. Know the routes to shelters, have emergency ‘to-go’ bags packed with essentials (including ID, documentation, cash, a baby emergency kit etc.), ensure your cars have a full tank of petrol, and have all emergency contact details written down and easily accessible.

Stock Up on Essential Supplies

Ensure you have at least a week’s supply of water (1 gallon or 4.5 litres per person per day) and non-perishable food for your family, including an emergency supplies bag for your baby. This kit should include nappies/diapers, wipes, baby food or formula or expressed breast milk, bottles, baby-safe hand sanitiser, and a first aid kit for at least a week. Where possible, include comfort items like favourite toys or blankets. Having a printed list of phone numbers for your baby’s paediatrician can also be helpful for urgent queries. Ensure your family and the baby have all the necessary medications and hygiene products.

Prepare for Power Outages

There is a chance that the power will go out, so it is vital to have ready-to-feed formula. If you’re not using formula, ensure a manual breast pump is on hand. Have flashlights, batteries, and power banks for charging devices. You might also consider a battery-operated fan to keep your baby cool.

Prepare Your Home for Safety

Secure windows with hurricane shutters or plywood, and bring in outdoor items that could become hazardous debris. Prepare a safe space in your home, ideally an area away from windows, where your family can shelter during the storm.

Keep Important Documents Safe

Store copies of you and your baby’s medical records, immunisation history, and essential contact information in a waterproof container or bag.

Stay Informed and Connected

Keep a battery-operated or hand-crank radio for Cayman Islands weather updates. Ensure you have a reliable means to stay informed, such as a local news app and a backup power source.
