Safety During Holiday Outings
Watch for Trip Hazards
From small business markets and Black Friday shopping to tree lightings and concerts, Cayman’s holiday calendar is packed with events. However, greater foot traffic and cluttered walkways can increase the risk of tripping and injuries.
Tips for navigating the holiday rush:
- Wear sturdy, non-slip shoes when shopping.
- Avoid carrying too many bags, as they can block your view of the ground.
- Watch for wet floors or dropped items in crowded stores.
- Arrive early to events to avoid rushing when parking or heading inside.
- For outdoor events, apply insect repellent to protect against mosquito bites. If it’s breezy due to a cold front, bring a light cardigan for yourself and your child.
Stay Mindful of Stress and Fatigue
The holidays can be stressful! A study by the National Accident Helpline in the UK found that 27% of people—about one in four—feel more stressed during the holiday season. As a new parent, balancing festive events and family needs can feel overwhelming. Rest when you need to. Take breaks during long shopping trips, stay hydrated, and don’t overextend yourself. Enjoy festive activities at home, like holiday sensory play, Christmas movies, or singing along to seasonal music with your baby (Apple Music, Spotify & YouTube all have some great playlists!).
Safe Driving
Holiday traffic and late-night shopping can increase road risks. Where possible try to plan your trips during less busy times and ensure everyone in the car, especially children, is properly secured.
Baby-Proof your Space & Decorations
Christmas Tree and Surrounding Area
Make your Christmas tree and the surrounding area safe for babies, especially if your little one has recently started crawling.
- Secure the tree and tree skirt to prevent tripping hazards for both your baby and yourself—particularly when carrying your baby near the tree to admire it!
- Avoid fragile ornaments. Opt for shatterproof decorations, and keep them out of reach where possible. Reserve the lower sections of the tree for soft, plush ornaments.
Candle Alternatives
Replace traditional tea light candles with decorative, battery-operated alternatives. Babies are quick, and accidents can happen just as fast. Using flameless candles in areas your baby frequents, such as the living room, can reduce fire hazards while maintaining a cosy, Christmassy glow.
Gift Wrapping Hazards
Gift wrapping can pose choking risks. Keep small items like ribbons, bows, and wrapping paper scraps in a container or basket that your baby cannot access. Tidy up promptly after wrapping to ensure your little one doesn’t get into anything dangerous.
